The Eye of the Cat

Well, it’s not really a cat’s eye, but it’s called that and you can see why.

Chrysoberyl is a mineral in the gem world, of which there are three main gem varieties:

  • Transparent Chrysoberyl - usually found in yellowish green to green, yellow and shades of brown.
  • “Cat’s eye” –  also known as cymophane. Microscopic needle-like inclusions reflect light along the center of the crystal, making it look very much like a living cat’s eye! The colour ranges from a honey-brown to an apple green.
  • The third is a rare and valuable gemstone – having the unique property of changing color, depending on the type of light that shines on it. In sunlight, it appears emerald green, yet in artificial light it appears a violet-red.

I’ll take two of each please, one for me, and of course, one for my cat.
